The organ was built in 1962 by J Walker & Sons Ltd, using some parts of the 4-manual, 60-rank Willis of 1902 that it replaced. Designed in supposed neo-classical style, after 50 years neither the tonal scheme nor the mechanical elements had worn well.
With Paul Hale as Consultant to the University, DWOB has carried out a major reconstruction, including re-organizing the winding and adding six stops, resulting in an instrument of 3 manuals and 53 speaking stops (54 ranks) far better suited to the room and for the purpose.
